A HISTORIC BUILDING, REBUILT FOR MODERN HOSPITALITY.
Hotel · Restoration · Automation · Hospitality
Lagom is the transformation of a substantial historic property on the edge of Ballycastle into a contemporary hotel and gathering place. The project began with a building full of character, but one never designed for the demands of modern hospitality. The ambition was to preserve what made it remarkable while completely reconsidering how it could perform, operate and be experienced.

RESTORED FROM THE STRUCTURE OUT.
The building was stripped back to its underlying structure, creating the opportunity to reconsider not only how it looked, but how it needed to perform as a modern hotel.
Original stone, brickwork and historic fabric were retained wherever possible, while the building was reconstructed around contemporary requirements for insulation, fire protection, heating, electrical services, networking, security and guest access. These technical requirements were treated as part of the architecture — integrated quietly into the building rather than competing with its character.
DESIGNED AROUND THE GUEST.
The building was considered around the way people actually move through, occupy and experience it. Lighting, heating, access and environmental controls respond intelligently to occupancy and demand, providing comfort precisely where and when it is required.
Automation and intelligent heating and lighting systems have helped reduce energy demand to approximately 50% of what would typically be expected, without compromising comfort or the guest experience.
BEYOND THE BUILDING.
Lagom’s intelligence was designed as an ecosystem. Loxone controls the physical environment — lighting, heating, energy and automation — while UniFi provides the network and camera infrastructure. WRDhaus then developed its own systems to connect the building directly with the guest journey.
A bespoke guest-access platform links reservations with the property, automatically managing access around each stay. Guests receive entry when they need it and permissions are removed when they leave, without requiring manual intervention from the hotel team.
WRDhaus also designed and developed the in-room guest interface. Each room has its own front-end application, bringing relevant stay information together with direct control of the room environment. Guests can intuitively manage lighting, temperature and other functions from a single interface designed specifically around the way the hotel operates.
Behind the scenes, these systems work together continuously — connecting guest, room, reservation and building.
The complexity sits quietly in the background. For the guest, the experience remains simple, personal and intuitive. For the Lagom team, repetitive operational tasks are automated, allowing their attention to remain where it matters: with the people staying in the building.
CONSIDERED HOSPITALITY.
Behind the historic stonework sits a building designed to understand how it is being used.
Old fabric, contemporary construction, intelligent systems and bespoke software operate as parts of the same architecture — allowing the technology to remain largely invisible while the character of the building remains firmly in view.
The building takes care of the building, allowing its people to take care of the guests.
